Getting Ready Spiritually for the New Year: Exploring the Seven Haftarot of Consolation.
7-9 pm, Wednesdays, July 29 through September 9
From the low point of the Jewish calendar year -- which is Tisha B'Av, a day of lament and fasting when we commemorate the various destructions of Zion and exiles of the Jewish people -- to the high point of Rosh Hashanah, when we welcome the new year, the Haftarah for each of the seven Shabbatot offers us consolation, encouragement and guidance for our spiritual journeys of return (teshuvah). In this class, taught by Rabbi Cindy, we will explore together these Seven Haftarot of Consolation, all of them taken from Isaiah 40-66. Classes will include time for hevruta study (paired or small group study) and discussion. We'll explore the themes presented in the Haftarot themselves as well as contemporary writings pertaining to these themes. Themes include comfort and consolation, exile and return, forgiveness, relationship, commitment and truth. The class is designed to help us get ready for the Yamim Noraim, the Days of Awe.
