Passover – First Seder

Because the first day of Pesach is on Shabbat again this year, Or Chadash will not be holding service on Friday, April 22. The yahrzeits that would ordinarily be read on 4/22 will be read the prior Friday.

While we hope many of you will be joining us for the Or Chadash Community Seder (See below) we know there are many members who would like to attend a Seder on the first night of Passover, but do not have a place to go.   We are offering to match people up with other members who have space at their home Seders. If you would like to attend a Seder please send a message to by Tuesday, April 19. Let us know of any kashrut concerns, special dietary needs or allergies. We will do our best to match up every request.   (Members only please)

Brief & Goofy Maariv Service Followed by an International Megillah Reading & Purim Shpiel

7 pm, Wednesday, March 23

We’ll first gather in Emanuel’s Sanctuary for the story of Esther, Mordechai and Haman with our annual megillah reading, so bring those groggers and noisemakers!

Then, we’ll have our annual Purim shpiel, “Knee-Jerk Redaction; Or, Fifty Shades of Divrei,” a dramatization of Torah scenes that have long been thought lost to the ages…until now. If you’ve ever wondered what Noah’s neighbors thought about his ark, or how Moses’ wife planned the first Passover during a wave of pestilence, please join us!

Do you make the best hamantashen hands down?  Then put your batter where your boast is! Whether it’s a traditional family recipe or one you found on Pintrest, bake a batch and bring it to the "Or Chadash Hamentashen Throw Down" on Wednesday, March 23 at 7pm.  Everyone will have a chance to cast their votes for their favorite, Chicago style - so you can vote as often as you’d like!  Voting tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. The baker that brings in the most votes will be crowned "Grand Kitchen Maven". All proceeds will be used towards our next Night Ministry social action event.

We need volunteers for the shpiel; if you would like to take part, please contact Matt Simonette through

Simchat Torah

Celebrate Simchat Torah with Or Chadash.

Join us on Monday, October 5, at 7 pm. We'll carry the torah scrolls around the sanctuary, then read from the end of Deuteronomy - reroll the scroll - and read from the start of Genesis.

It's a festive time - we look forward to seeing you.

Or Chadash Blogs Elul:  Check Us Out!
For the last few years, Rabbi Phyllis Sommer has embarked on a social media project to prepare for the High Holy Days through reflection and introspection in the month of Elul. Her project, #BlogElul, has resonated with Jews across the world, and has given rise to a lot of Elul content in social media–and now it’s time for Or Chadash to join the movement! During the month of Elul, as we prepare to receive the year 5776, members of the Or Chadash community will create posts centered around the themes provided by Rabbi Sommer. This blog will collect these posts and allow us to engage in meaningful conversations via comments and perhaps even your own responses on your social media. We encourage you to participate in the worldwide conversation in order to enrich your Elul experience.
